Tips for Storing Canvas
Proper storage of canvas is vital to its long life. In order to protect this important and essential art material, as well as your finished paintings, follow these tips.
• It is highly recommended to frame your painting. This helps to prevent buckling and makes it easier for transporting.
• Store away from strong direct light and exposure to moisture. Roll unstretched canvas around a firm center and cover to protect from dirt and UV rays. Light will destroy canvas just as it does any form of fabric.
• Store stretched canvas standing upright along one edge in a rack. To avoid abrasion, multiples should be stored back-to-back, in pairs.
• Avoid storing stretched canvas in vertical stacks. This can warp stretchers and cause damage or rips.
• Avoid high humidity. Choose an air-conditioned storage space. It can take a while for the damage to become visible, but by that time the damage is already done.
• If you decide to store your painting for an extended period of time, you should check periodically for damage and remove dust.
