Summer Activities Bulletin Board

Summer’s almost here! While students are counting the days until summer break, this engaging bulletin board will remind them to stay active and get outside to play. It’s a great choice for a health or physical education classroom. We’ll show you how we made our display (it’s so easy!) and offer a few alternatives if you’d like to get creative.

Summer Activities Bulletin Board

How We Did It

We started with a roll of cloud print paper to make the sky, then cut out shades of green paper to create the rolling hills. More cut paper formed the mountain peak and the smiling sun. We used a green wavy border to make the bottom edge look like grass. Then the other edges of the board were framed with leis that were cut and attached to form a border. A self-adhesive jumbo alphabet made it easy to spell out “Summer’s Here!”

To create more fun details, we decorated the board with foam flower shapes. Next, the 3-D kids were added using a set of Happy Kids puppets and their kites were created with a tissue kite craft kit. To motivate students to exercise this summer, the phrases “Get up, get out, get off the couch!” “Take a hike, go fly a kite!” and “Keep a moving, keep a grooving!” were added by adhering more cutout alphabet letters.

Make It Your Own

You can follow our method exactly or mix it up with these creative alternatives:

  • Use jump ropes as a border for the bulletin board.
  • Leave space in your design for each student to write down his or her favorite summer activity.
  • Modify the design for a sports theme and include sports ball shapes.
  • Attach the puppets with touch fastener strips so they’re removable. Use them to let kids talk about their summer activity plans.
  • Include a map and talk about summer vacation destinations. Talk about the physical activities you can do at each attraction.
  • Add a countdown calendar. Each day, choose a student to remove the calendar date and talk about his or her summer activity plans.
