Up & Away VBS Decorations: The Sky's the Limit

The Up & Away Vacation Bible School theme is designed to teach children that anything is possible with God – the sky’s the limit! And the sky’s the limit when it comes to decorating for your Up & Away VBS, too. Use these tips to create a VBS setting that captures imaginations and encourages children to get uplifted by the Lord.

  • Begin by creating sky backgrounds. This can be accomplished by using backgrounds or backdrops printed to look like a sky or by using pale blue paper, sheets or table covers.  You can also put a sky-themed covering on the floor to give kids the feeling of being completely up in the sky.
  • If you need to add clouds to your “sky”, use paint, gossamer, cotton batting or even a bunch of white balloons tied together.
  • Add cutouts such as kites, rainbows, planes and hot air balloons. These items all represent soaring with faith. You can either purchase these cutouts or make them yourself. If you choose to make them, enlist help from the kids either ahead of time or during the opening night of VBS.
  • If you have the space, incorporate some standups. Standups such as kites and hot air balloons add dimension to your setting and capture kids’ attention.
  • Your VBS will probably need some signs – everything from station signs right down to name tags. Tie these signs into your Up & Away theme by including kites, clouds, hot air balloons or rainbows on them. You can purchase items that already feature these icons or use Up & Away theme stickers or stampers to personalize the signs and name tags you make yourself.
  • Never underestimate the power of balloons, streamers and rolls of paper. With those items you can do all of your decorating or make items to complement pieces you’ve purchased and to fill in gaps.

The sky’s the limit when it comes to decorating for your Up & Away VBS. With some planning and imagination, there’s no limit to the decorating you can accomplish.
