Bridal Showers – Frequently Asked Questions

If you have found yourself in charge of hosting a bridal shower, don’t panic. This handy guide will help you organize a truly magical event everyone will remember.

Who hosts the bridal shower?
Traditionally, the bridal shower is hosted by the maid of honor with help from the other bridesmaids. Alternativly, it may be hosted by a close friend of the bride. The bridal shower is not traditionally hosted by a relative, however, the maid of honor is often the sister of the bride, which has become widely accepted. Also, it is not uncommon for the bridal shower to be hosted by a sister-in-law-to-be or a mother-in-law-to-be.

When should bridal shower be held?
This depends completely on the bride’s schedule. One to two months before the wedding is ideal. Any closer to the wedding, and the bride’s thoughts may be consumed with last-minute thoughts about the wedding, leaving her unable to relax and enjoy her bridal shower.

Where should you host the bridal shower?
The bridal shower is usually held at the home of the hostess, or if this is not possible, at someone else’s home. It can also be held at a church or a hall. Some bridal showers take place in restaurants as well. Keep in mind that if you choose a restaurant as your location, your costs may increase.

How many guests should you invite to the bridal shower?
Typically, the bridal shower consists of between 10 and 20 of the bride’s family and friends, but this will depend on the bride’s immediate family, friends, co-workers and where the shower will be held. Keep in mind, the more you limit the guest list to a reasonable amount, the easier it is to keep organized.

What kind of food should you serve at a bridal shower?
Quick and easy finger foods are usually the preferred option for a bridal shower. This can include an assortment of sandwiches, cakes, cookies, quiche, chips or fruit. Refreshments should also be on hand: punch, tea, coffee, soda, juice and mineral water.

Should we play games at the bridal shower?
Even though good food, drinks and lively conversation are the main ingredients of a bridal shower, games can help loosen everyone up and can usually make the bridal shower fun for everyone.

How long should the bridal shower last?
Two to three hours is the typical length a bridal shower should last. Some guests may not be able to stay the entire time, while others will stay until it ends. And if things are going well, you can always extend the time.

How do you inform guests about a gift registry?
In some instances it is okay to note on the invitation where the bride is registered, but in others, it is not acceptable and this information is usually passed on by word of mouth. Guests may also ask you when they call to RSVP.

Should guests invited to the shower be invited to the wedding as well?
Yes. It is in good taste to invite those from the bridal shower to the wedding also.

Are favors for guests necessary?
Shower favors aren’t expected, but are a great way to impress guests. If you plan on giving favors, consider a small potpourri sachet, scented candles or candies wrapped in tulle.
