Creative Party Ideas For A Child's 1st Birthday
Written By Penny Warner.
Your child's first birthday is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion that you'll want to share with family and friends. Here are some tips for celebrating this special event, with ideas for two complete party themes!
Theme
Choose a baby-related theme, such as: Animal Adventure, Babes in
Toyland, Big Top, Busy Builders, Baby Gym, Music Maker, Storybook Time,
or Teddy Bear Picnic. Below are details for two popular themes – Animal Adventure and Babes in Toyland.
Invitations
Host a party for family only, or invite a few babies and their parents
to join in the fun. Keep the party short – 1 to 1 ½ hours – and limit
the number of guests to keep it manageable.
- Animal Adventure: Send animal masks with party details written on the back. Include small animals in the envelope. Dress kids up as animals when they arrive, with animal masks, headbands, caps, and hats.
- Babes in Toyland: Send a picture of your baby, and include a small toy in the envelope. Have guests bring a favorite toy to share at the party.
Decorations
Treat your one-year-old to a room full of fun and fantasy.
- Animal Adventure: Place animals around the room. Hang animal posters on the walls. Use an animal-theme tablecloth and paper products and animal sippy cups. Create a centerpiece with animals nestled in a bandanna-lined basket.
- Babes in Toyland: Set out toys for the kids to enjoy. Decorate in primary colors – using red, blue, and yellow tablecloths, paper products, and balloons. Make a centerpiece of toys, blocks, or balloons.
Games & Activities
Keep the activities short and simple for the one-year-olds.
Animal Adventure:
- Face Painting – Paint their faces with animal designs using age-appropriate non-toxic face paints.
- Animal Acts – Put on animal masks and act like the animal.
- Puppet Show – Present an animal puppet show for the kids.
Babes in Toyland:
- Hide and Seek – hide toys in plain sight and let the kids find them.
- Silly Stuff – give them unique and age appropriate play-things to explore, such as magic springs, sticky stuff, inflated toys, bubbles, and other novelties.
- Play Time – set out lots of fun and safe toys for the kids to enjoy, such as cars, balls, blocks, wooden toys, simple puzzles, and noisemakers.
Refreshments
Check with the parents to see if the kids have any allergies. Creative bite-size finger foods are best.
Animal Adventure
- Serve "Zoo Food" – Monkey Bites (cut-up bananas), Animal Crackers, Bear Food (peanut butter & honey on crackers), and Tiger Milk (chocolate milk) in animal theme cups.
Babes in Toyland
- Serve "Toyland Treats" – Building Blocks (sandwiches cut into squares and piled up like blocks), Cheesy Balls (round cracker sandwiches spread with cheese), and Magic Milk (chocolate milk) in colorful cups.
Favors
Give out the favors early in the party so the kids can play with them
at activity time. Make sure that favors are safe and age-appropriate.
- Animal Adventure: Stuffed animals, bendable animals, baby animals, animal puppets, animal masks and animal hats.
- Babes in Toyland: Assorted toys, such as inflatable or plastic balls, blocks, puzzles, magic springs and small cars.
Thank yous
Keep the camera handy and take lots of pictures, then include them in the animal - or toy-theme thank you notes.
